The best place for planting blueberry plants is an area with very acidic, moist soil. Test the soil before planting the blueberry shrubs. Blueberries need a soil pH level of 4 to 5 in order to thrive.
Blueberries grow best when the soil contains 4 to 7 percent organic material, such as grass clippings, peat moss, manure, leaves and compost. Mix the organic matter into the top 6 inches of soil one year before planting the blueberry plants. This gives it time to become incorporated into the soil.
Blueberry plants require good drainage to a depth of 18 inches. Test by digging a hole 18 to 24 inches deep and pour a bucket of water into the hole. If the water does not drain away in 6 to 8 hours, then consider planting the berry bushes in raised beds.
