The Best Place to Plant Blueberry Plants

Blueberry plants are picky about where they grow and do not perform well in the right area. Blueberry shrubs require full sun exposure to produce the best harvest. Full sun is defined as an area with at least 6 hours of sun a day.
  1. Considerations

    • The best place for planting blueberry plants is an area with very acidic, moist soil. Test the soil before planting the blueberry shrubs. Blueberries need a soil pH level of 4 to 5 in order to thrive.

    Significance

    • Blueberries grow best when the soil contains 4 to 7 percent organic material, such as grass clippings, peat moss, manure, leaves and compost. Mix the organic matter into the top 6 inches of soil one year before planting the blueberry plants. This gives it time to become incorporated into the soil.

    Warning

    • Blueberry plants require good drainage to a depth of 18 inches. Test by digging a hole 18 to 24 inches deep and pour a bucket of water into the hole. If the water does not drain away in 6 to 8 hours, then consider planting the berry bushes in raised beds.
