Is a Blueberry Bush Evergreen?

The term "blueberry" describes a number of North American shrubby plants in the Vaccinium genus and Cyanococcus section. These perennial plants are named for their dark purple to blue berries. Some blueberry plants are deciduous, and lose their leaves in winter. Others are evergreen, and retain their foliage all year.
  1. Evergreen Blueberries

    • Some blueberries, primarily varieties native to the southeastern United States, never lose their leaves. These include the Darrow evergreen blueberry, the creeping blueberry and the evergreen blueberry. These species have a fairly restricted range and are not grown commercially.

    Deciduous Blueberries

    • Most blueberries native to cooler climates, including commercial varieties, lose their leaves in the winter. Commercial varieties include both lowbush and highbush blueberries, named for the shape of the plants.

    Color Change

    • Deciduous blueberry species have leaves that change color before they drop for the winter. Most blueberries turn bright red and orange in the autumn, making them an attractive ornamental choice as well as a useful food plant.
