Some blueberries, primarily varieties native to the southeastern United States, never lose their leaves. These include the Darrow evergreen blueberry, the creeping blueberry and the evergreen blueberry. These species have a fairly restricted range and are not grown commercially.
Most blueberries native to cooler climates, including commercial varieties, lose their leaves in the winter. Commercial varieties include both lowbush and highbush blueberries, named for the shape of the plants.
Deciduous blueberry species have leaves that change color before they drop for the winter. Most blueberries turn bright red and orange in the autumn, making them an attractive ornamental choice as well as a useful food plant.
