Do Blueberries Like Acidic Soil?

Blueberries are a popular fruit to eat as well grow in a home garden. They require a certain type of soil to grow that most people do not have in their gardens. There are ways to get the correct consistency blueberries need.
  1. Soil

    • Blueberries require well-drained, acidic soil and a pH range of 4 to 5.5. If the soil isn't acidic enough, add a small amount of granulated sulfur to the soil several months prior to planting. Soil should also have 4 to 7 percent organic matter for blueberries to prosper.

    Fertilizing

    • Fertilize blueberries using a combination of 10-10-10 fertilizer at 10 to 16 oz. per 100 feet of row. Make sure to keep the fertilizer 6 inches away from the plants. In the second through 12th years, use 2 to 3 lbs. of the 10-10-10 fertilizer for maintenance purposes.

    Watering

    • Blueberries have a shallow root system, so they need 1 to 2 inches of water each week. During dry spells, water more frequently. Cease watering after the beginning of September unless the soil is dry.
