What Do Blueberries Need to Grow?

Growing blueberries is a good venture for the home gardener, as they take up relatively little space. Supplied with the right growing conditions, including plenty of sunlight and nutrients, blueberry plants will produce for years.
  1. Soil Requirements

    • The most crucial component to successfully growing blueberries is the soil pH level. Blueberries require a very acidic soil ranging from 4 to 4.5, with lots of organic matter worked in and a steady supply of moisture. On loam or clay soils, the Ohio State University Extension recommends planting blueberries in raised beds for better drainage.

    Nutrients

    • The organic matter, in the form of grass clippings, manure or leaves, should be worked into the top 4 to 6 inches of soil. Fertilizers should be used in conjunction with soil tests to determine requirements, as overfertilizing blueberries can cause plant damage.

    Maintenance

    • Blueberries don't need to be pruned during their first three years of growth. Blossoms should be removed during the first two years to stimulate growth. Four-year-old plants should be pruned in late March, to eliminate dead and weak branches with small buds.
