How to Grow Blueberries in Texas

Rabbiteye blueberries are the best choice for Texas growers. Acidic soil in several regions of Texas is ideal for rabbiteyes; in other areas of the state you can amend the soil or grow rabbiteyes in containers. Expect ripe blueberries from the end of May to late July and plan to pick every week during those two months. One mature rabbiteye blueberry bush yields 15 pounds of blueberries per growing season.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase blueberry varieties that will do well in Texas. Make sure you choose rabbiteye varieties, which are best suited for Texas soil. Include three varieties per planting to allow for cross-pollination.

    • 2

Prepare the soil by adding 1/2 bushel of peat moss into the hole for each blueberry plant. If you live in East or Southeast Texas, your soil may be acidic enough for blueberries. Otherwise, extensive amendment may be necessary. Perform a soil pH test. Soil pH of 4.0 to 5.5 is optimal. Since blueberries do well in peat moss, there's no limit to how much you can add.

    • 3

Plant blueberries in full sun. They need eight to 10 hours of sun every day for maximum yield.

    • 4

Cut off one-half of the blueberry plant's height after planting. Space blueberry plants 6 feet apart and space rows 10 to 12 feet apart.

    • 5

Mulch blueberry plants with 3 to 4 inches of lawn clippings, pine bark, sawdust or hay to keep moisture in the soil and prevent weeds. Mulch also helps the soil's acidity and cools the soil during hot Texas summers.

Fertilize blueberry plants with fertilizer designed for azaleas or camellias every three weeks during the summer and fall. Use 1/8 or 1/4 cup per plant. Don't fertilize blueberry plants their first year, and make sure you do not overfertilize or use nitrate fertilizers so that plants will not burn.
