Blueberries grow on shrubs, not vines. Highbush blueberry shrubs grow particularly in North America and, because of this, North America produces almost 90 percent of the world's blueberries per year.
Blueberry season runs from mid-April through early October. The height of blueberry season is in July, which has been dubbed National Blueberry Month in the U.S. Blueberries, like many fruits, are often preserved and canned, thus allowing them to be purchased at any time during the year.
The history of blueberries in the U.S. dates back to the Native Americans, who gathered blueberries from bogs and forests and even attached religious sentiments to the star-shaped blossom ends of the berries. Pilgrims learned to cultivate blueberries from the Native Americans.
