Privets have 3- to 4-inch long glossy foliage with wide, blunt tips. Privets can grow up to 18 feet tall and respond well to pruning to keep to desired height.
Common varieties of evergreen privet used for hedges include wax privet (Ligustrum japonicum), glossy privet (Ligustrum lucidum) and Chinese privet (Ligustrum sinense).
Privet hedges adapt well to areas of full sun to partial shade. The fast-growing hedges benefit from fertilizer application two to three times per year and have a moderate water requirement.
Privet hedges are susceptible to a number of diseases and insect infestations that include anthracnose, armillaria root rot, gall mites, pit scales and black vine weevil.
