Evergreen Privet Hedges

Evergreen privets (Ligustrum spp.) belong to the olive family. Ligustrums also include a number of semi-evergreens and deciduous trees and shrubs. Evergreen privets are commonly used as hedge plants given their dense growth.
  1. Description

    • Privets have 3- to 4-inch long glossy foliage with wide, blunt tips. Privets can grow up to 18 feet tall and respond well to pruning to keep to desired height.

    Varieties

    • Common varieties of evergreen privet used for hedges include wax privet (Ligustrum japonicum), glossy privet (Ligustrum lucidum) and Chinese privet (Ligustrum sinense).

    Growth Requirements

    • Privet hedges adapt well to areas of full sun to partial shade. The fast-growing hedges benefit from fertilizer application two to three times per year and have a moderate water requirement.

    Problems

    • Privet hedges are susceptible to a number of diseases and insect infestations that include anthracnose, armillaria root rot, gall mites, pit scales and black vine weevil.
