The Propagation of Blueberries in Missouri

Blueberries are woody shrubs that produce small, blue berries during the summer months in Missouri. The shrubs can be propagated by taking semi-hardwood cuttings, ideally from late spring to early summer.
  1. Cuttings

    • Propagate the blueberry bush by removing 6-inch long sections of semi-hardwood cuttings after the flush of growth in late spring. Semi-hardwood cuttings are sections of new branch growth that are beginning to harden and mature. Stick half the length of each cutting into a propagation tray filled with damp rooting soil.

    Rooting

    • Mist the propagation tray and blueberry stems with water. Cover the tray with a plastic bag to create a greenhouse environment for root growth. Place the tray in an area with a temperature of 68 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit with indirect light. Monitor the soil moisture to make sure it does not dry out.

    Transplant

    • Transplant the blueberry stems into 3-inch pots once the roots reach a length of 1 inch. This takes approximately six weeks. Grow the stems indoors for the first growing season. Transplant the blueberry stems the next spring in Missouri, once there is no longer a risk of frost.
