Can You Replant Shoots of Blueberry Bushes?

Blueberry bushes are a woody perennial shrub that produces an edible fruit during the summer growing season. Propagating the bush by taking stem cuttings allows you to replant shoots to produce new plants.
  1. Propagation

    • Replanting shoots of blueberry bushes requires cutting a section of stem off the bush. A semi-hardwood stem grows roots more quickly than hardwood stems cut during the dormant season. It is best to remove the leaves from the bottom half of the stem to prevent them from rotting during root growth.

    Care

    • Roots grow on blueberry stems when they are stuck in a propagation tray filled with a moist propagation soil. Placing the tray in an area with a temperature of 68 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit will stimulate root production. Monitor the moisture of the medium to make sure it stays moist, not wet, during root production.

    Replanting

    • You can replant blueberry stems once the roots are more than 1 inch long. You may want to grow the stems indoors for the first growing season to produce a strong growth ball before planting outdoors. Apply a high phosphorus fertilizer diluted to half strength when transplanting to stimulate root establishment.
