Blueberries are a member of the Ericaceae family, which also contains other native plants such as the cranberry, azalea and heather. The plant is deciduous, dropping leaves in the late fall and flourishing during spring and summer months.
In order to produce blueberries, the largely self-sterile plants depend on cross-pollination. Bees naturally pollinate blueberries and they do well when planted in close proximity to other blueberry plants.
Blueberries prefer soil that has a high acid content. Mix organic matter into soils up to a year in advance of planting blueberry shrubs. Soil with a pH of 4 or 5 best supports a successful blueberry bush.
