How to Fertilize Boysenberry Bushes

Boysenberries are close relatives of the blackberry. The fruit looks and tastes similar to blackberries, but the plants are a cross between the blackberry and a raspberry. Boysenberries grow as a bramble bush and they are typically grown on trellises so they don't trail all over the garden. Boysenberries have similar cultural and care requirements as blackberries, and thrive in areas with blackberries or raspberries grow well. Proper fertilization ensures healthy growth and an abundance of flavorful berries.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply 2 lbs. of ammonium nitrate fertilizer, a 21-0-0 blend, to every 100 feet of growing bed in spring when new growth begins. Fertilize only if the boysenberry grew or produced poorly in the preceding year.

    • 2

Use 4 lbs. of 10-10-10 fertilizer instead of the ammonium nitrate if growing boysenberries on sandy soil or a soil deficient in phosphorus.

    • 3

Spread the fertilizer over the entire planting area, but keep it 6 to 8 inches away from the base of the boysenberry canes. Applying fertilizer directly to the canes may result in burning and plant damage.

    • 4

Water the bed thoroughly after fertilizing to help the nutrients leech into the soil. Irrigate until the top 8 inches of the soil feels moist.
