Shredded oak leaves are an acidic garden product, which makes them an excellent mulch for blueberries. As they deteriorate, the oak leaves will lower the pH of the soil, making it more acidic, which is the soil condition in which blueberry plants thrive. Oak leaves alone will not provide all the nutrients and acidic properties required by the plants, so you will need to combine them with peat moss and compost. The other amendments will add other essential nutrients to the soil. Put down the mulch in the spring.

Spread 1 inch of shredded oak leaves over the compost, rake it out, and keep it off the base of the plants. Repeat this application each spring, raking up the old mulch layer and spreading it evenly over the soil so it can decompose quickly under the new mulch.
