How to Make a Vertical PVC Strawberry Planter

When cities run out of room they begin to build up vertically. You can use the same tactic in your garden by constructing a strawberry high-rise. Traditional strawberry planters are tall clay pots with holes in the sides that allow you to cultivate multiple plants in a small space. Use lightweight, inexpensive PVC pipe to create a durable alternative to a fragile pottery planter.

Things You'll Need

  • 4 feet of 6-inch-diameter PVC pipe
  • Drill
  • 1 1/2-inch circle cutter bit
  • Posthole digger
  • Shovel
  • Wooden stick (optional)
  • Potting soil
  • Strawberry plants

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a 4-foot length of 6-inch-diameter PVC pipe.

    • 2

Drill a row of four 1 1/2-inch holes evenly spaced around the pipe, using a hole cutter attached to a drill. Make the first row 18 inches above the bottom end of the pipe. Drill six rows of holes, leaving 4 inches of space between the holes.

    • 3

Use a posthole digger to dig a 1-foot deep hole in your garden.

    • 4

Place the bottom end of the pipe in the hole. Pack the dirt firmly around the pipe and fill it with dirt to ground level. Pound down the dirt inside the pipe with the shovel handle or a sturdy stick, until it is firmly packed. Add more dirt inside the tube if necessary.

    • 5

Fill the tube with potting soil to the level of the middle of the lowest row of holes.

    • 6

Plant a strawberry plant in each hole on the lowest row. The point between the roots and the stem of the plant should be even with the side of the pipe. Fill the pipe with potting soil up to the middle of the next row of holes, and plant four more plants. Continue adding soil and plants until you reach the top of the pipe. Water the planter well.
