Strawberry Plant Diseases

Strawberries, much like other plants, can be attacked and affected by diseases that can destroy roots or kill strawberry plants entirely. Knowing certain diseases that affect strawberry plants can prevent your crop from being destroyed.
  1. Alkali Yellows

    • Alkali yellows is a disease caused by strong alkaline soil, which causes iron or manganese to be unavailable to strawberry plants. Symptoms do not occur on flowers or fruit, but leaves of a strawberry plant can be small or look white.

    Armillaria Root Rot

    • Armillaria root rot is a white fungus that attacks the crown and roots of a strawberry plant.

    Black Root Rot Complex

    • Black root rot complex is a combination of fungus, nematodes and poor soil characteristics. Symptoms include black discolorations on roots, and smaller foliage with poor color.

    Common Leaf Spot

    • Common leaf spot is a fungus that infects strawberry plant leaves. Symptoms include dark, almost purple spots on leaves.

    Gray Mold (Botrytis Fruit Rot)

    • Gray mold is a fungus that affects the entire strawberry plant, including fruit, which will have fuzzy mold growing on its surface.

    Leaf Scorch

    • Leaf scorch is another fungus that attacks strawberry plant leaves. Leaves will appear with numerous red spots, giving them a scorched look. In severe cases, foliage is reduced considerably, and plants may be stunted.
