How to Plant Raspberries in the Fall

Raspberries are delicious. Whether fresh from the garden, sprinkled over ice cream, turned into a jam or whipped into a milkshake, these berries have a flavor all their own. Gardeners are finding it is easy to plant and care for raspberry plants. Once planted, a properly maintained raspberry plant will produce for about 10 years. New plants can be started off the old ones, so an established berry garden will last for as long as the gardener can tend it.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the site for the berry trellis. The area should be in a sunny and well drained section of the garden. Plan on two to four feet per berry cane.

    • 2

Prepare the soil before planting by tilling it and removing weeds or other foreign matter. Work the soil so it is loose. Add fertilizer to give the root stock plenty of nutrients for the upcoming winter.

    • 3

Dig a 4-inch deep trench. Place the root stock in the trench. Space the plants about two feet apart. Cover the plants with soil.

    • 4

Water the plants thoroughly for at least a week after planting.

    • 5

Construct a trellis system for the raspberry plants.

    • 6

Prune or cut back the raspberry plants to about three or four inches before winter.
