How to Make Your Own Bird Repellent

Everyone loves birds, but if you have a garden or statuary, you might find their presence less than enjoyable. Birds love to eat ripening fruit, especially cherries, strawberries and blueberries, as well as corn. In urban areas, pigeon droppings also damage ledges and statues. Many types of birds can be safely startled and chased away from gardens and landscaping by hanging basketball-sized balloons from poles at the center of the property.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Buy two to four large balls to hang in the yard before the fruit ripens and birds become accustomed to feeding there.

    • 2

Paint giant black and red bulls eyes on both sides of each ball.

    • 3

Choose central locations that are clearly visible to the birds. Hang the balls from the poles with twine where they can swing in the breeze.

    • 4

Move the poles around every seven to 10 days so the birds don't get used to seeing them.

In Japan, this method is used to protect acres rice fields. It has also proved successful in the United States and Canada, particularly with flocking birds such as grackles, starlings, crows and pigeons.
