How to Trellis Raspberries

Raspberry brambles will grow quickly and with canes and fruit, but can quickly topple over as a result of their own success. Building a trellis for your raspberry plants can prevent this and bring with it a lot of other benefits. Growing your raspberries on trellises means the brambles get more air flow. This helps prevent mildew and allows you to practice better pest management. Your fruit will be cleaner, easier to harvest and will make an attractive presentation in your garden.

Instructions

    • 1

Set a six-foot post about one foot into the ground at both ends of your raspberry rows.

    • 2

Make two crossbars from the 2-by-4 boards. Nail one crossbar to each post, about two feet off the ground and the near the top of each post.

    • 3

Wrap 16-gauge wire around the end of the bottom crossbar and stretch it to the end of the crossbar of the same height on the opposite post. Do this from the end of each crossbar, for a total of four pieces of wire running across your raspberry patch.

    • 4

Tighten the wires about once a year when the weight of the plants causes the wires to sag.
