How to Protect Blackberries From Birds

Growing blackberries can be a frustrating task, since birds tend to eat any berries that sprout. Sprays and powders are available to deter birds from eating blackberries, but the products can have an adverse effect on the crop. Netting material can successfully keep birds from getting to berries without applying any type of chemical on the berries.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the height and circumference of your blackberry crop.

    • 2

Choose netting to cover your crop. The openings in the net should be 5/8-inch squares. The best material for this netting is black polypropylene mesh netting because it isn't affected by harsh sunlight.

    • 3

Cut the netting to fit the size of your crop. Make it a little bigger than your measurements so there is room to tuck in the netting as needed.

    • 4

Place landscape fabric pins 5 inches outside the perimeter of your blackberries. They should be placed 12 inches apart.

    • 5

Drape the netting over the blackberries. Tuck in the netting underneath the fabric pins so it is secure. The pins are anchored into the ground through the opening in the netting.

    • 6

Go out each day to check the netting. Make sure birds haven't gotten caught in the netting.
