Blackberry Bush Information

Blackberry bushes are shrubs that have thorns and produce the bramble fruit, blackberries. Because of their reputation for taking a large area of space for growing, they need to be planted in an expansive setting to accommodate their growing needs. Some have been known to grow upwards of 10 feet. Blackberries are members of the Genus Rubus, as a part of the rose family.

    • The beauty of blackberry bushes is that they can be planted in most any type of soil. They have been compared to weeds because they are able to subsist and develop most anywhere. Blackberry bushes are actually grown throughout the world. They can grow in extremely hot climates to very cold. In addition, there is a varied assortment of blackberry bushes from which to choose.

    Planting

    • Begin the planting process in the spring. In preparation for planting your blackberry bushes, keep in mind that the most amenable soil pH is around 5.5 to 7. Be certain to tidy the area, so it is free of insects, weeds and rocks. After planting, trim six inches off of the bush to promote healthy growth.

    Appearance

    • The blackberry bush leaves have edges that are serrated and oval-shaped. They have a natural sweet-smelling nectar that is the delight of bees, and is also an aid in the pollination process of the bush. The flowers begin to emerge in June and last through September and have a whitish-pink color.

    Maintenance

    • The first blackberries will not appear the first year, but emerge during the second year instead. For maintenance and upkeep, fertilization and weeding should be done at this point, as well. Be certain to add one inch of water per week to the bush.

    Expectations

    • After the blackberries begin growing, they should be picked every three to six days. Blackberries typically will continue to prosper and regenerate new berries for up to 20 years of eating pleasure. They are known for their health value in that they contain folic acid, vitamins C and K, manganese and folic acid.
