How to Start Strawberry Seeds Indoors With an Egg Carton

Egg carton gardening is one of the best ways to get kids familiarized with the joy of growing strawberries. Being an indoor project, starting strawberries from seed is a fun-filled way for kids to learn about the stages a seedling goes through before it becomes a full-fledged strawberry. Also this is a cost-effective way to recycle and reuse something that would otherwise be thrown away. Not only that, but the kids will have a sweet treat to reward them for their efforts once they have harvested their crop.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the egg carton in half.

    • 2

Place the top of the carton under the bottom of the carton as a tray.

    • 3

Poke a hole in each egg holder.

    • 4

Add 1 tbsp. of potting soil to each egg holder.

    • 5

Add a pinch of seed starter to the potting soil.

    • 6

Press two or three seeds into the potting soil/seed starter mix and pat down firmly.

    • 7

Add 1 tsp. of water to each seed holder.

    • 8

Wrap the whole container in plastic wrap loosely, leaving one end open for ventilation.

    • 9

Place in a warm, sunny area, such as a kitchen window. It should take five to seven days for seedlings to sprout. When they have begun to outgrow the egg carton container, plant each individual plant in a separate pot.
