How to Protect Blueberry Bushes From Frost In Spring

Blueberry bushes grow well in USDA zones 2 through 8. The bushes may become damaged and possibly may die in temperatures below 28 degrees F, which is why you have to protect them from the cold weather in spring. Once the blossoms are damaged on the bush, it will not produce fruit. The unopened blossoms and berries tolerate frost more than the flowering blossoms, but you need to protect them to prevent any possible damage.

Instructions

    • 1

Plant the blueberry bushes in an area in your yard that resists frost. Certain areas in your yard such as low areas and those close to bodies of water may freeze quicker and remain frozen longer than other areas.

    • 2

Prune the blueberry bushes every year. Remove the short and smaller shoots on the bush, and keep the thicker branches, which are hardier to the cold weather.

    • 3

Water the soil to keep it moist during the cold spring nights. Moist soil will allow surface heat to keep the bushes warm.

    • 4

Place buckets filled with warm water around the blueberry bushes at sunset before the frost at night. This will help to radiate heat and increase the temperature to prevent the frost from harming the blueberry bushes.

    • 5

Place polypropylene fabric over the blueberry bushes. This will protect them from cold spring winds.
