New York Native Wild Berry Plants

There are hundreds of plant species in New York state, and of those hundreds there are a series of edible wild berries ripe for the picking.
  1. Mulberries

    • Mulberries are usually best enjoyed as a dried fruit but can be eaten raw as well. These grow in upstate New York regions. Although the majority of species are native to Asia, New York is home to the red mulberry. They grow in the northeastern region of North America including Vermont and as far north as Ontario, Canada.

    Elderberries

    • Elderberries grow in New York state and are extremely high in Vitamin C. Not only are the berries edible, but the flowers are known to make great tea as well. Farmers markets often sell elderberry syrup or jam even though they have a tendency to taste bitter when eaten raw. The American elder species of elderberries is most known to New York and other northeastern states.

    Raspberries

    • Raspberries are grown year-round due to advancements in cultivation techniques, but if you are looking for them naturally in the wild, New York state is where they can be found. Raspberries have the best raw taste and are also widely used as a base for syrup or jam. The bushes in New York are covered in thorns, and the berry grows in bunches or clusters around the branches.
