How to Space Blackberry Vine Plantings

Blackberries thrive in a variety of soil conditions and survive in both sun and shade. One of the most important aspects of planting blackberry vines is proper spacing. Although small blackberry vines look like nothing more than twigs, they grow rapidly. If proper spacing is not maintained the vines will grow together into a tangled mess, making it nearly impossible to collect your full blackberry harvest.

Instructions

    • 1

Select an area to plant the blackberry vines that features full sun with well-drained soil. Dig into the soil to make sure it's black and fertile and not sandy or hard clay.

    • 2

Dig a hole and plant the first blackberry vine, planting it 1 inch deeper than it was planted in its nursery container. Fill in the hole and pack it down firmly.

    • 3

Space the trailing vines at least 5 feet apart in the row, but not more than 8 feet. If you're growing upright blackberry varieties along a trellis or fence in a horizontal direction you can reduce spacing to 3 feet between plants. Space rows 6 to 10 feet apart.
