Dig a hole twice the size of your plant's root system. Space holes for each plant 6 to 8 feet apart to accommodate their trailing nature.
Set an individual trellis at a hole for each triple crown plant, or install a wire system that runs two horizontal wires from one end of the row of blackberries to the other.
Place each cutting or transplant into its own hole, letting it rest an inch deeper than it was packaged or potted. Bring soil around the roots and into the hole to fill it. Firm the soil around the plant to secure it. Spread 1 to 2 cups of compost around the base of each plant and firm to the ground.
Soak the soil with a heavy application of water to thoroughly moisten the roots and soil around them. Fertilize the soil each spring with 1/2 cup of 8-8-8 fertilizer around the plant a foot away from the center. Supply an inch of water to the soil every week for two to three months.
Attach new canes to your trellis as they grow, using plant ties. In the first year these canes will make leaves, but in the second year they will produce fruit. After the fruit harvest is over in year two, clip these canes from the plant and remove.
Tie any new 1-year-old canes to the trellis so they are ready for fruiting the following year. Repeat clipping spent canes and tying new ones each year to make harvesting easier.
