Can Raspberry Bushes Grow in Clay Soil?

Raspberries can grow in clay soil, but prefer well-drained, acidic loam soil. To encourage growth and higher fruit production, amend clay soil with plenty of organic matter such as compost, well-rotted manure and peat moss.
  1. Planting Site

    • Raspberries thrive in full sun and need space to grow. Some cultivars need support from a trellis. If soil is not well-drained, plant the canes in small hills or raised beds to promote drainage.

    Types

    • Raspberries are classified as either summer-bearing or ever-bearing. Summer-bearing cultivars produce one crop of fruit in summer. Ever-bearing cultivars produce two crops, one in spring and one in fall.

    Features

    • Most raspberry plants yield either black raspberries or red raspberries, though there are a few purple and yellow cultivars. Red raspberries are generally more cold hardy and ripen earlier than black raspberries.

    Benefits

    • Raspberries are a source of vitamins A and C, antioxidants, soluble fiber, minerals and ellagic acid, an anti-carcinogen.
