Raspberry Plant Structure

The structure of a raspberry plant is similar to that of a blackberry plant. Though some cultivars offer different growing features, most raspberry plants share common characteristics. In some cases, the variations can influence the time of year the fruit is produced but little else.
  1. Plant Parts

    • The raspberry plant's crown is the base of the plant. The roots grow from the crown. Both the roots and the crown can live for many years. The canes, which grow above ground, are biennial.

    Cane Structure

    • In all types of raspberry plants, the canes grow directly from the crown or from the base of older canes. For most raspberries, the first-year canes produce only leaves and are called primocanes. The second year, the canes produce fruit and are called floricanes. Red raspberries can also produce new canes from their roots.

    Flowers and Fruit

    • White flowers grow in clusters along the cane. The fruit is ripe when the color is mature and the berry loosens easily from the plant. The raspberry separates from its fruit receptacle when picked, unlike its cousin the blackberry.
