How to Prune Black Currants & Raspberries in New Zealand

Black currants and raspberries both grow on bushes; both can be grown in New Zealand and many parts of the Western hemisphere. Pruning black currant and raspberry bushes will encourage their growth and fruit production, meaning you will have more fresh black currants and raspberries to eat ripe in the summer and preserve as jams or jellies for use in the colder months.

Instructions

    • 1

Look for buds on your black currant and raspberry bushes in late June or early August, just before spring breaks in New Zealand.

    • 2

Use gardening shears to prune the bushes back to two buds by cutting away the other buds. The goal of severe pruning is to encourage the bushes to grow up from the roots, which will produce new fruit in the summer.

    • 3

Allow the black currant and raspberry bushes to form new growths and buds as the New Zealand spring continues; when summer arrives in December, the berries will begin to ripen.
