When to Pick Northern Rasberries?

American red raspberries are native to the Northern areas of the country, although they can grow elsewhere in certain conditions. Pick Northern raspberries when they are a deep red and have that unmistakable raspberry scent.
  1. Late Spring

    • Several varieties of raspberries ripen within a short time span in the late spring and early summer. Red spring ripening berries include latham, titan and liberty.

    Everbearing

    • Everbearing raspberries ripen all summer. The canes have flowers, green fruit and ripe fruit all at the same time. Pick the fruit when it is deep red or, in the case of yellow raspberries, a mellow yellow. Some everbearing red raspberries include heritage, ruby and redwing. Yellow everbearing varieties include fall gold, amber and goldie.

    Location

    • Raspberries ripen in different locations at different times depending on the weather and variety. While heritage ripens in late spring in Midwestern states such as Illinois, the same variety ripens through October in Southern states such as North Carolina.
