Inspect the bush daily for fruit color beginning in midsummer as the fruit begins to ripen. The fruits reach up to 1/2 inch in diameter as they begin to reach maturity.
Pick the berries for use in jams and jellies when the fruits are still green and hard. Harvest for fresh use after the berries become pink and softer.
Grasp the branch holding the ripe berries in one hand. Twist the berries from the stem with your other hand. Avoid pulling the fruit, which may damage the stem end of the berries and shorten their storage life.
Store the gooseberries in the refrigerator immediately after harvesting until you are ready to use them. Refrigeration prevents the berries from overripening or rotting for up to two weeks.
