Choose a site to grow Redhaven peaches that offers full sunlight and no shade from trees or buildings. In addition, make sure the site is elevated so cold air will flow away from the tree during the blooming season. Select an area that is 5 to 6 feet in diameter.
Make sure the growing area also has a sandy loam soil that is well-drained. Collect a sample of your Redhaven peach growing soil and take it to an extension office for testing of its pH, or level of acidity and basicity. The ideal soil pH for growing peaches is 6 to 7.
Spade the site to a depth of 10 inches to 12 inches. Add organic matter, including grass clippings or manure, and add the amount of needed fertilizer or lime as indicated by the results of the soil test.
Dig a hole in the planting area large enough to accommodate a starter Redhaven peach tree's root system. Trim back long roots and cut off damaged ones. Position the plant so the bud union -- the area where the rootstock and young shoot of the plant meet -- is an inch above the soil's surface. Firm the soil around the tree and water the soil to eliminate air pockets around the roots.
Apply fertilizer to the Redhaven peach tree's soil seven to 10 days after planting. Use a half pound of a 10-10-10 fertilizer, following the manufacturer's instructions. Spread the fertilizer 8 to 12 inches away from the tree's trunk. Keep the soil damp.
Prune the tree, removing limbs that hang low as well as diseased and broken limbs. Cut the tree back so it is no higher than 30 inches. Apply a chemical weed control to the growing area according to the label directions.
