How to Plant a Berry Bush

Berry bushes are a true delight, producing colorful flowers in spring and tasty fruits during the heat of summer. They make excellent garden plants, but are attractive enough to be used in landscaping as well. The plants also provide a source of fall and winter food for many types of wildlife. Most berry bushes do best in full sun and soil that doesn't remain too moist. They should be planted in winter or early spring, depending upon the variety.

Instructions

    • 1

Loosen the soil at the garden site with a tiller.

    • 2

Mix 3 to 4 inches of compost with the turned soil.

    • 3

Dig a hole wide and deep enough to plant the bush at the same level it was growing before. Arrange the roots so that they are not bunched up. If planting a bare-root bush, examine the main cane for a soil line to determine the correct depth.

    • 4

Replace the loose soil and pat down. Water until the soil around the bush is very moist.

    • 5

Add 2 to 3 inches of organic mulch under the bush, keeping it from touching the stem.
