Loosen the soil at the garden site with a tiller.
Mix 3 to 4 inches of compost with the turned soil.
Dig a hole wide and deep enough to plant the bush at the same level it was growing before. Arrange the roots so that they are not bunched up. If planting a bare-root bush, examine the main cane for a soil line to determine the correct depth.
Replace the loose soil and pat down. Water until the soil around the bush is very moist.
Add 2 to 3 inches of organic mulch under the bush, keeping it from touching the stem.
