Layering is a method of rooting stems while they are still attached to the plant. For that to occur, the twig has to stay in constant contact with moist and well-aerated soil. Several ways of layering exist. Purple and black raspberries propagate through tip layering. Once the stem has rooted, separate it from the mother plant to allow the new bush to develop on its own new root system.

1
Dig a hole next to the raspberry bush 3 to 4 inches deep. Make the hole near a raspberry cane that is long enough to reach it. The stem also needs to have additional length so that part of it can be buried.
-
2
Place the raspberry cane tip inside the hole. Refill it with topsoil.

3
Cut the rooted stem from the rest of the plant in early spring or late fall. Transplant it to its permanent location.
