How to Use Preen With Blueberries

Blueberries are an extraordinary fruit, filled with antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Growing your own blueberries is a good option, and just like other plants in your garden, blueberries will thrive better when they are not keeping company with unwanted weeds. Weeds steal important nutrients from desirable plants. Lebanon Seaboard Corporation manufactures Preen for Vegetable Gardens, which also works for fruits and herbs. It is made from 100 percent corn gluten and is a natural pre-emergent herbicide that prevents new weeds from springing up around your blueberries. Preen is most effective when applied monthly.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean around the base of the blueberry bushes to remove leaves, rocks, dirt clods and debris.

    • 2

Allow the soil around the blueberry plants to dry completely before adding Preen. If the soil and plants are wet, Preen may stick to the leaves and stems and cause damage.

    • 3

Sprinkle Preen Vegetable Garden Weed Preventer around the plant directly onto dry soil. Though the product label specifically mentions vegetables, it is also formulated for fruits, including blueberries. The applicator used to spread Preen is supplied with the product. The type of applicator will vary depending on container in which the product was sold.

Water Preen into the soil immediately after application. This will activate the product. Soak the soil thoroughly with a garden hose or sprinkler. Preen can also be applied to the soil if rain is expected within 24 hours of application. If you cannot water the area immediately, and no rain is expected, use a rake to work the product into the soil.
