Types of Blueberries & Leaf Identification

Blueberries are a perennial shrub that are easy to grow in most North American gardens to provide decorative blossoms and edible berries. Blueberries are closely related to cranberries. The main two blueberry types are the highbush blueberry and the rabbiteye blueberry, but there are several varieties both, and some can be identified by looking at their leaves.
  1. Rabbiteye Blueberry

    • The rabbiteye blueberry's leaves are about 1 to 2 inches in length, are a deep purplish green color and are arranged in a spiral shape along the stem of the blueberry bush. The tree can grow up to 15 feet in height, although it has many different varieties that grow smaller, including the climax blueberry, the delite blueberry and the sharpblue variety.

    Highbush Blueberry

    • The highbush blueberry can grow up to 13 feet in height and is one of the most common types of blueberry bush found in the wild.

The leaves of the highbush blueberry shrub are slightly larger than the rabbiteye blueberry, growing to 2 inches long. They are a light green color and grow in alternating pairs, meaning the leaves on the opposite side of the stem are placed a bit higher than the leaf opposite it, and the leaves are not attached to the stem at the same point.

    Velvetleaf Blueberry

    • The velvetleaf blueberry is sometimes called the Canadian blueberry and is found across much of North America in boreal forest areas. This blueberry plant is one of the few varieties with very distinguished leaves, because they have tiny hairs that resemble velvet. They are soft to the touch, shiny and a bright green color. This bush grows only 35 inches tall.

    Elliot's Blueberry

    • The Elliot's blueberry is found in the warmer areas of the United States and has very tiny leaves. The leaves are thin and narrow, only reaching half an inch long. This blueberry shrub's leaves are also serrated on the edges. The Elliot's blueberry also has small pink flowers as opposed to white flowers like most blueberry shrubs. The shrub grows to about 8 feet tall.
