How to Harvest Scarlet Runner Seeds

Scarlet runner beans quickly run up trellises and other support systems via their climbing vines. Bright red flowers blossom along the length of each vine, continuing to bloom throughout summer. Scarlet runner beans are served as green beans in the tender pod stage, but because their beans have a stringy texture, the plants are usually grown as ornamentals. You can allow them to mature fully and harvest the seeds for planting next year.

Instructions

    • 1

Pick the bean pods when their color changes from green to brown or tan. Feel the pods before picking to ensure they are dry and papery. The beans inside need to be swollen and hard.

    • 2

Line a large tray with newspaper sheets. Place the bean pods on the tray in a single layer.

    • 3

Dry the beans in the pod for two weeks. Any moisture trapped within the pods evaporates during this time.

    • 4

Break open the pods and shake out the beans into a bowl. Scarlet runner bean seeds are mottled with black and purple markings.

    • 5

Press on the beans with your fingernail to check that they are fully dry. Your nail won't dent fully dried runner beans.

    • 6

Place the beans in an airtight container. Store in a cool, dark place until you are ready to plant them.
