How to Grow Royal Burgundy and Purple Beans

Royal Burgundy, commonly called the purple bean, is an incredibly tasty type of bush bean. Although the 5-inch-long beans on the bush are a deep, almost black, purple, they turn green when cooked. Although they may germinate in cooler soil than other beans, it's best to wait until the soil is 60 degrees, to a depth of 4 inches, before planting in full sun. Royal Burgundy beans are hardy in zones 3 through 9 on the U.S. Department of Agriculture Plant Hardiness Zone Map.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the bean garden by removing weeds, rocks and debris. Aerate the soil with a garden fork, digging down to a depth of 10 inches and crushing big clumps.

    • 2

Spread 3 lbs. of 5-10-10 fertilizer per 100 square feet, over the soil and use the garden fork to mix it to a depth of 10 inches. Rake the bed until it's smooth.

    • 3

Push the Royal Burgundy seeds 1 inch deep into the soil, 4 inches apart. Water the area until the top 6 inches of soil is moist and keep it moist while the Royal Burgundy seeds germinate. They should sprout within six to 10 days.

    • 4

Provide the Royal Burgundy bean seedlings 1 inch of water a week if it doesn't rain.

    • 5

Side-dress the bean rows when the plants set pods. Use 1 lb. of ammonium nitrate per 100 square feet. Dig a 2-inch-deep trench, 3 inches to the side of the rows. Scatter the ammonium nitrate along the bottom of the trench, cover it with soil and water the area to a depth of 6 inches.

    • 6

Harvest the Royal Burgundy beans 53 days after planting, when the beans are just become visible through the pod.
