How to Plant Mountaineer Beans

The Mountaineer bean, also known as Mountaineer White Half Runner, is a variety of pole bean. The plant produces 4-inch-long edible bean pods with white beans. Mountaineer beans are vining plants that thrive on trellises or pole supports. This vertical growth gives gardeners more room for other plants along the rows. The Mountaineer bean is easy to plant and requires little maintenance once established.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a planting location in full sun (at least eight hours of sunlight daily) and well-draining soil. Pull up any weeds in the gardening site. Do all this in spring, after the last frost passes.

    • 2

Insert bean poles into the soil at a depth of 6 inches. Place the poles 3 feet apart. When the Mountaineer beans become established, you will train them to grow up the poles instead of along the ground.

    • 3

Insert the seeds into the soil at a depth of 1 1/2 inches. Leave 1 inch between each seed. If you have more than one row, keep the rows 2 to 3 feet apart. Firm the soil on top of the seeds, and water until the soil settles.

Wait two weeks for the beans to germinate. Once they sprout, thin the rows by removing the weakest, smallest plants, so there is a space of 3 inches between each plant.
