How to Build Pole Bean Supports With Bamboo

Pole beans are a climbing variety of beans that grows on long vines. If the beans are not supported, they may rot in the dirt or overrun your garden. Providing the beans with support allows them to grow properly and keeps your garden tidy. Bamboo poles are an ideal support building material because they are flexible and sturdy. Creating a bamboo support tepee around each plant provides the necessary support without having to build an entire trellis.

Instructions

    • 1

Loosen the soil around the pole bean plants with a shovel, to a depth of 8 inches. The loose soil should form a 3- to 4-foot-diameter circle around the plant.

    • 2

Insert one bamboo pole into the loose soil circle at a depth of 6 inches. Space the poles at least six inches apart. Repeat with each pole bean plant.

    • 3

Grasp two poles that face each other in the same circle. Hold their tops together so they cross about four inches from the top. Gather the tops of the other poles together, bending the poles and forming a tepee over the plant.

    • 4

Wrap the poles in twine five or more times to secure them. Tie a knot in the twine to keep the tops in place. Repeat with each tepee. The pole beans will then climb the legs of the tepees.
