How to Make a Lattice for Beans

Growing beans in your home garden requires support for the vines to climb up, providing them with better air circulation, less risk of disease and more simplified harvesting. While you can purchase a lattice from most home improvement stores, you can also use basic gardening stakes to make a lattice which will last for years. Once your lattice is created it can be set into the garden and planted around with beans or any other climbing plant.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay two of the 7-foot boards parallel to one another 3 ½ feet apart on their 2-inch width. Cut the remaining 7-foot board in half so each piece is 3 ½ feet long. Place one of the 3 ½-foot long boards between the 7-foot boards at one end to form a “U” shape. Insert two screws through the 7-foot boards to secure the shorter board.

    • 2

Place the other 3 ½-foot board at the open end of the “U” shape between the 7-foot boards. Move the board inward by 18 inches to form an upright rectangle with legs. Insert two screws through the 7-foot boards and into the ends of the 3 ½-foot board to secure the frame of the lattice.

    • 3

Place the 3 ½-foot stakes inside the rectangular frame running horizontally. Space the boards every 6 inches between the frame top and bottom. Insert a screw through the frame and into both ends of each stake at every point where the stakes meet the sides of the frame.

    • 4

Lay out the 4 ½-foot stakes every 6 inches running vertically to form the lattice shape. Use screws to secure these stakes to the frame at each point where they meet. Connect the vertical and horizontal stakes by inserting one screw through the stakes at each point where they intersect.

    • 5

Dig two 1-foot deep holes set 3 ½ feet apart in the garden area where you will be planting your beans. Stand the lattice upright and slip the legs of the frame into the holes. Fill in the holes and pack the soil firmly around the base to hold the lattice secure.
