When to Plant Green Beans in Zone 7

Green beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) are a warm-season annual vegetable grown for their edible pods. They are one of the easiest plants to grow from seed, and both bush and vine forms are available. Green beans thrive in the heat of summer and can be planted a soon as all danger of frost has passed in spring.
  1. Zone 7 Characteristics

    • The areas designated as U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zone 7 include a band of states stretching from Virginia and western North Carolina through Tennessee, Arkansas and northern Texas to parts of New Mexico and Arizona. Along the West Coast, zone 7 covers many middle elevation areas. Average minimum winter temperatures in zone 7 are between zero and 10 degrees Fahrenheit. The average date of last spring frost in zone 7 is approximately April 15, plus or minus two weeks.

    Early Planting

    • Plant green beans in zone 7 as early as May 1 for an early summer crop. Earlier planting is possible, but the likelihood of a late frost causing damage to the plants is higher. Also, frosty weather may not occur in April, but both soil and air temperatures are likely to remain cool, slowing the germination and growth of seedlings. Bean seed germinates best when soil temperatures are between 70 and 80 degrees. Germination is very slow if soil temperatures are under 60 degrees.

    Late Planting

    • The average date of first fall frost in zone 7 is Oct. 15, plus or minus two weeks. To find the latest date to plant green beans in zone 7, subtract the number of days to maturity for the variety to be planted. This information can be found on the back of most seed packets. Green beans require anywhere from 50 to 100 days from planting to harvest, depending on the variety. This equates to planting as late as mid-August for a fall harvest of the fast-maturing types.

    Using a Cold Frame

    • Using a cold frame or greenhouse can extend the growing season for about one month on either side of the growing season. A cold frame is like a miniature greenhouse that is placed directly over the bed of soil. It is most useful as a way to warm the ground in early spring and to protect from any late frosts. The small size of a cold frame accommodates the growth of seedlings and can then be removed to allow the plants to grow to maturity once temperatures are adequately warm.
