How to Grow String Beans From Seed

Green beans are one of the most popular home garden crops. They are easy to grow and yield large amounts of vegetables at harvest time. There are two main types of green bean plants: the pole bean and the bush bean. String beans are known as bush beans, and they are easier to grow than their pole counterparts. Plan on planting your bean seeds outdoors after the danger of frost has passed. It’s important not to plant too early because the seeds can rot if the soil is too wet or cold. The soil should be at least 65 degrees F before planting.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a spot in your garden that gets six to eight hours of sun per day.

Dig up the soil in the planting area to a depth of 6 inches. Break up any large clods of dirt with your shovel, and remove any rocks and roots you find.

    • 3

Add a 2-inch layer of compost to the soil and mix it in well. Add 1/2 cup of 10-20-10 fertilizer for every 10-foot row that you plan to plant and mix it into the soil as well.

Plant the bean seeds in rows, 2 feet apart. Place the seeds 2 inches deep into the soil and 6 inches apart.

    • 5

Water well after planting and keep the soil moist but not soggy. Once the seeds sprout, give the plants 1 inch of water a week.
