Life Cycle of Pinto Bean Plants

The life cycle of a pinto bean plant takes about 90 days to complete. The pinto bean is easy to grow and packed with protein and nutrition.
  1. The Seed

    • The seed consists of two halves called cotyledons which are covered by a protective layer. This shields the seed during dormancy.

    Germination

    • When water softens the protective outer layer, the seed will split into two halves. A root will begin to grow downwards while the stem will begin pushing its way up towards the sun. The two cotyledons provide nutrition for the developing plant.

    Growing

    • When the seedling erupts from the soil, new leaves will begin to form above the cotyledons. The cotyledons will shrivel as the nutrition is used up and the root and leaves begin making their own food for the plant.

    Flowering

    • When the plant reaches a height of 6 to 8 inches, it will begin to flower. The flowers will develop into pods after fertilization.

    Maturing

    • The pods are filled with four to eight seeds. The pinto bean seeds will grow within the pod until late fall. If not harvested, the pods will split and the seeds will be deposited onto the ground for the next growing season.
