How to Germinate Pinto Beans

Pinto beans grow quickly and do not require a lot of time to germinate. Germinating the seeds ensures that they grow once planted. Plus, it teaches children about the process of seed germination, which makes it an interesting school project or simply a home lesson in where food comes from. Once you germinate the seeds, you can plant them to grown pinto beans outside. You can begin harvesting the beans after three months.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the pinto beans in a bowl. Soak them in warm water at room temperature overnight.

    • 2

Dampen a paper towel. Place it in the bottom of a plastic zipper bag. Place two to three beans in the bag.

    • 3

Place the plastic bag in a dark, cool environment. Kitchen cabinets or pantries work well.

    • 4

Inspect the bag every day to see if any beans sprouted.

    • 5

Plant the sprouted bean after germination. Place it in a pot, 3 to 4 inches deep in soil, and water it to keep the soil damp. Sit the pot in a sunny window for at least eight hours a day.

    • 6

Transplant the bean sprouts once they grow to 3 inches. Keep the plants at least 15 inches apart, and plant them as deep as they are in the container.
