How Fast Does a Bean Plant Grow?

Beans have been considered a food staple for centuries and are still used in cuisine around the world. Beans grow relatively quickly, and this easy-to-grow vegetable makes a nutritious addition to a backyard garden.
  1. Time Frame

    • Several bean varieties are ready to harvest 57 to 68 days after germination. Successive plantings every three weeks will ensure a continuous harvest. Frequent harvesting will increase the plant's productivity.

    Instructions

    • Beans should be planted in early spring, after the threat of frost passes. Plant individual bean seeds in average soil 3 to 5 inches apart in rows at least 18 inches apart. Pole beans can also be planted in hills 30 inches apart with several bean seeds per hill. Seeds should be planted 1 inch deep.

    Types

    • The two main bean categories are bush beans and pole beans. Bush beans grow upright on their own without the need for exterior support, while pole beans must be stakes or trellised to develop properly.

    Misconceptions

    • Unlike peas, beans should not be soaked in water prior to planting. Soaking can cause the bean seed to crack and rot.
