What Do You Need to Grow a Bean Plant?

Bush beans grow on low bushes, while pole beans send out long vines. To grow a bean plant, you need a large pot, a good quality planting soil and something to support the pole bean vine.
  1. Bush Bean

    • To grow a bush bean plant, you will need a pot that is at least 10 inches in diameter and 9 inches tall. Fill the pot to about 2 inches from the top with a good planting mix that contains a lot of organic material.

    Pole Bean

    • Growing a pole bean requires a pot at least 12 inches in diameter and 11 inches tall and something to help hold the vines up as they start growing. Fill the pot nearly to the top with planting mix.

    Planting and Support

    • Plant either kind of bean about 2 inches deep in the soil. Water it, cover it with plastic wrap, and put in a dark place until it sprouts. Remove the plastic wrap, and place the pot in full sun. Do the same for the pole bean, but place a stick that is at least 6 feet tall in the soil, and about 2 inches from the bean sprout. As the bean vine grows, it will wrap itself around the stick.
