To grow a bush bean plant, you will need a pot that is at least 10 inches in diameter and 9 inches tall. Fill the pot to about 2 inches from the top with a good planting mix that contains a lot of organic material.
Growing a pole bean requires a pot at least 12 inches in diameter and 11 inches tall and something to help hold the vines up as they start growing. Fill the pot nearly to the top with planting mix.
Plant either kind of bean about 2 inches deep in the soil. Water it, cover it with plastic wrap, and put in a dark place until it sprouts. Remove the plastic wrap, and place the pot in full sun. Do the same for the pole bean, but place a stick that is at least 6 feet tall in the soil, and about 2 inches from the bean sprout. As the bean vine grows, it will wrap itself around the stick.
