# Do You Need to Stake Soy Beans in a Garden?
Soy beans have moved into the backyard garden as more families discover the ease of growing their own soy beans and the many flavorful ways they work in recipes. Soy beans are a warm weather bean and do best in loose, loamy soil.

Bush Beans

Soy beans (Glycine max) are bush beans and do not send out runners as pole beans do. They are planted and treated the same as any other bush bean.
Plant in Rows

Because soy bean plants are not climbers or vining plants as a general rule they do not need to be staked or set against a trellis. They are planted in rows about 30 inches apart and only grow to about 30 inches high.
Staking Occasionally Necessary

Under exceptionally good growing conditions the soy bean plant may have enough pods to drag the stems down to the ground. If this happens, it is acceptable to provide extra support by using small thin stakes. Stakes with a larger diameter have a greater chance of damaging the mature roots.
