How to Build a Cage for Pole Beans

Pole beans need vertical support as they grow and climb in a vegetable garden. Over time and with proper care, pole beans grow tall in a garden, enabling a gardener to pick green beans from the vines growing up a support structure. Make a simple cage for pole beans to give them the necessary support to grow. Using basic materials, you can construct a cage that holds your bean plants securely.

Things You'll Need

  • Four metal T-posts, 6 feet tall
  • Hammer
  • Rolled garden fencing
  • Bolt cutter
  • Nylon ties

Instructions

    • 1

Pound the T-posts into the ground around one or two pole bean plants, positioning them in four corners to make a square-shaped cage approximately 4 inches away from the plants. Pound the stakes about 4 inches into the soil.

    • 2

Unroll the garden fencing around the T-posts, starting at the outside edge of one T-post. Attach the garden fencing to each T-post at the top and bottom of the posts using the nylon ties. Pull the fencing around each T-post until you come around again to your starting point at the first T-post.

    • 3

Cut off the garden fencing with the bolt cutter where it wraps around the first T-post the last time.

    • 4

Attach the end of the garden fencing to the same T-post with the nylon ties at the top and bottom of the T-post to finish the cage for the pole beans.
