How to Support Bean Plants

Beans come in pole bean, bush bean and half-runner varieties. Pole beans and half runners benefit from support because they grow vines that need to climb. A simple, tepee-style tripod provides adequate support for bean plants as they grow. In addition to offering stability to your bean plants, this bean tower is a fun activity to get children involved in planting and maintaining a garden.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay three poles on the ground. Mark the poles at 1, 2, 3 and 4 feet.

    • 2

Drill holes through each of the poles at the measured intervals. You will drill 12 holes in all.

    • 3

Lash the poles together by threading twine through the top set of holes.

    • 4

Spread the poles out to form a standing tripod.

    • 5

Thread twine through the next set of holes, making a circle around the entire tripod, to hold it stable. Thread twine through each set of holes down the length of the poles.

    • 6

Dig a hole to bury each leg of the bean tower in a sunny spot in the garden. This offers added stability against harsh winds or visiting animals.
