What Do Pinto Beans Need to Grow?

The pinto bean belongs to the family Phaseolus vulgaris, along with several other species of beans. Flourishing even in arid conditions, the pinto bean is a versatile crop and generally has a higher yield than other types of beans such as green beans. Growing pinto beans entails preparing and adding nutrients to the soil.

  1. Temperature and Planting Area

    • The optimum temperature for growing pinto beans is around 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Being warm weather crops, pinto beans should not be planted if there is frost present in the growing area. Choose an area free of weeds and grass; it is difficult for pinto beans to grow when there is other vegetation competing for resources.

    Mulch and Compost

    • Nitrogen is a crucial element for the proper growth of pinto beans, and may be from peat or compost mixes. Make sure the soil is free of excess water to prevent the plant from rotting, and put each plant into a mound of soil, about one foot apart from another. Adding mulch will help decrease infestation of weeds and will also help keep the soil moist.

    Watering and Harvesting

    • Pinto bean plants should be watered with 1 inch of water once or twice a week. Excessive amounts of water can lead to malformed bean pods. The best times to water are in the morning and early afternoon. Harvest your pinto beans when the pods are green, full and plump.
