How to Stake Italian Green Beans

Italian green beans are available in numerous varieties, including Romano, Roma II and Gina, among others. Most Italian varieties of green beans are flat instead of tube-shaped like other bean varieties. Since Italian green beans grow on a vine or tall bush, it is important to stake them to support the plant's height. Proper staking ensures that multiple plants don't tangle together and prevents the beans from laying on the ground, which can cause rot.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a 6-foot-long wooden pole in the ground approximately 1 foot away from the Italian green been plant. Lean the top of the pole toward the plant until it is directly over it.

    • 2

Hit the top of the pole with a mallet until it is approximately 6 inches in the ground and supports itself. The pole should be at an angle when properly inserted.

    • 3

Insert two more wooden poles in the same manner, positioning them at equal distances around the Italian green bean plant. When properly installed, all three poles should lean toward the plant and meet above it like a teepee.

    • 4

Cut off a 2-foot-long piece of twine. Gather the three pole tops together with your hands so that they overlap. Wrap the twine around the top of all of the poles twice, then tie the twine ends in a firm knot to secure it. Cut off any excess twine using scissors.

    • 5

Wrap the Italian green bean vine gently around one or more of the poles if the plant is tall enough. If the plant is still small, it will naturally wrap itself around the poles once it grows taller.
